…between reality and the dream…
A few nights ago, I caught a bit of a very popular talent show that searches across the country looking for the best singer. (Believe it or not, I actually do get a chance to peek at the TV screen maybe once a week). Although I had fun listening to the various singing styles and genres of the contestants, what I found myself actually listening to, were the journeys some of them had taken to arrive at that moment in front of the Judges.Leer más

Not just one day, EVERYDAY!
I'm always interested in how things begin.
One day in the studio we were joking around and Ann said the expression, "That's the Ticket!" Immediately I went into wondering where in the world a slogan like that came from. We went on line and discovered that "that's the ticket" came from... No, not a baseball game or a lottery reference but from the great depression when soup tickets were given out and hard to come by... Crazy right?Leer más

...they live in my music...
One night during the past holiday, one of my friends asked me if I miss people who have made their transition and are no longer with us during this time of year. She recalled how many moments she can still capture just by looking in a family album or using the tableware saved for those holiday festivities.
She reminded me that favorite foods can always be cooked, but somehow will never taste quite the same without her Grandma standing over the pots or supervising the making of the meal. Although it still gave her joy to watch the same old movies she used to watch with her grandpa, but not being able to hear his laugh or verbal reactions, diminished them a little.
I immediately thought of the many things I miss without my Nana or my spirited Titi’s being around to give the holidays that really special meaning. Up until that moment I hadn’t taken the time to look in any family albums or gone into the kitchen to make some of the comfort foods my Nana use to make. But not too long after my friend left, I was sitting at the piano and it occurred to me that even without trying, I could play just two or three simple notes, perhaps even a full chord and that specific sound would push to the surface the voice, even the spiritual presence of my Nana.
It was at that moment I realized that when my family albums are not around or I’m too far away to enjoy eating from my Nana’s favorite holiday plates, I can still “visit” with all of my loved ones by just touching the keys and listening to the melodies that once lived inside of them, and still live inside of me. So, they live in my music.

…a voice in the Desert..
Sunrise. The cool, desert morning air surrounds me, filling my lungs and heart with a special renewal of spirit. A kind of renewal that only comes when I’m running here. Not a race, no one pushing me toward a Finish Line, just the personal motivation of mind and body to move closer to an experience of still, yet busy, desert life. My run creates a special vision as I mark my distance balancing on the split yellow line in the center of the road. I can see more than usual.Leer más

Let's Raise a Glass
The usual image most of us have when we envision the beginning of a New Year is a festive occasion with friends and family raising their glasses, making a toast to a healthy and prosperous future. I too have raised a glass to welcome a new year, but when doing it, I’m reminded of that half full, half empty proverb. This New Year, I want to start with a totally empty glass that waits to be filled with all of the experiences and adventures life will pour into it.Leer más

...The Gift..
I was twelve. Signs of the holiday season were sprouting up all over the city. For reasons I can’t totally remember, my usual babysitting customers weren’t calling. Although I had always counted on the money I brought in from those jobs to get my mom something special, for the first time, I wanted to include J.D., a “special friend,” who lived down the block from me who I had met over the summer. He moved to the city from Atlanta and had this sort of quiet, southern charm that made me play with my hair whenever he smiled at me.Leer más

A question of beauty..
The dictionary defines the word "beauty" as "a quality that is present in a thing or person giving intense aesthetic pleasure or deep satisfaction to the senses or the mind."
It defines the word both as a verb (to beautify) and an adjective (it is beautiful). I bring this up to mention a few words regarding a talk show I happen to catch where the subject focused on a new film documentary by Chris Rock, that deals with the work and effort made on behalf of black women to "beautify" their hair.Leer más - 11.23.2009
..a Thankshelping..
I was running late for a studio session a few days ago. Rather than sit in the stress of standstill traffic, I decided to jump out of the car and walk the rest of the way. As I approached the next corner, I noticed a woman in a wheelchair covered with an old, dark grayish blanket. She wore a beat up, leather aviator hat and a pair of DK knockoff sunglasses. Seeing as how it was almost sunset, I lifted my dark glasses as permission to approach.Leer más

Loneliness, the real deal
During a break in a recent recording session, I passed through the lounge area where most of the studio musicians were buzzing around, laughing and talking, and happened to notice one musician sitting in the corner cleaning her instrument. I quietly watched the tenderness and care she applied to her cello. Since my role in "The Secret Life of Bees" I've had this "thing" about anyone who plays the cello. When the session ended, a few of us were sitting in the studio and I observed the cellist, gently packing her instrument.Leer más

a fantasy to believe in..
I had the chance a few nights ago to catch a screening of the animated film, "Nine". Now I usually don't endorse any particular film or t.v. show because I'd just rather leave that sort of thing to the critics. However, this little film from Canada that deals with end of the world civilization and what remains to carry some sort of hope into the future, struck me in such a profound way, that I just wanted to give my fam a heads up to try and catch this one before it leaves the big screen.Leer más
