People have tendencies to play the songs they are most familiar with at first then gradually begin to listen to the rest of the album. However, because I'm such a big fan of AK and was able to play her prior three albums all the way through, I decided to listen to Freedom of Element in its entirety upon purchasing the album in Dec. 09. When hearing this track, I felt an instant connection and the song was set to repeat. "How It Feels to Fly" is very inspiring. Whenever I hear it, I am placed in a zone. I hope it's scheduled to be release as the next single. Thank you for sharing and please continue to bless us with your talent.

I do not know...cannot really feel it. Alicia Keys should tell her man to shut the hell up and do things on her own. Can you imagine like...rude Alicia, "good girl gone bad" style? But she is too sweet for it...so....

Is it me or is this part of the site hard to find? I was looking around for the lyrics and I am so happy Alicia shared her creative process of putting this song together. I think this is her best song ever. Sometimes when I listen to it, I can't help crying. The times when we risk ultimate failure, just to get to live a little bit of our dreams...

This is one of my favorite songs on the album. It was catchy the first time I heard it. One of those songs you just can't stop singing. I love this version and couldn't imagine it sounding better. Glad you went along with the advice . Never stop the music. LOL

I think these are one of the most beautiful lyrics of the album. Just like you said, that whole idea of 'opposites' is so strong and it definitely worked out on this song. I love the kind of gospel vibe that it has to it and it's one of my favorites from The Element of Freedom.

I also like how 'flying' sorta connects to Freedom, which makes the song a real element of Freedom

I fell in love with this song the moment I heard it. Lyrics and melody are so so POWERFUL! well said, Alicia. I think a lot of people can relate to this concept. What I got out of the song, is that it's about taking chances, risk, living life to the fullest without regret, without turning back. Moving forward with confidence, fully exposed to what life has to offer every second of every minute. Taking the bad with the good and learning from it, turning it into a positive. Everything happens for a reason. Flying free without worry, free to love, and soar in pure happiness and joy.

in a more literal sense: i jumped out of a plane this past year because i've always been fascinated with flying. although I am very scared of heights, to me it symbolized me taking a risk/chance to conquer my fears and experience life in a way i've never done before. it was well worth it of course and the feeling afterwards was indescribable.

It was great meeting you Alicia the other night at the Black Ball. i had told you at the end of our conversation that "How it Feels to Fly" was my favorite and now you write about it here. (i will patiently await the day you sing it live always cool hearing from your inside artist perspective. thanks for being so open and free to share yourself with your fans and the world. every time I learn more about you I become more and more fascinated with your talent and beauty. most notably, you inspire greatness in others, particularly the orphaned & abandoned children in Haiti. your ability to instill the purest form of joy in them through your music is absolutely incredible. This song literally made me cry when I heard it for the first time! It was 6:15 in the morning on December 15th. I had got The Element of Freedom the day before that in the mail, but had to study for exams that night, so didn't get to listen all the way through. I was on the bus on my way to school just sitting there falling asleep then this song came on and I immediately sprung up! It was so BEAUTIFUL and the sound and your voice captured my mind and made me think of what it's like to fly! I was singing this song all day through the halls and in classes! It's my favorite song on the album! The bus driver thought something was wrong with me tho...lol I smiled and said I'm absolutely perfect today! haha

AK, once again u had touched my heart n soul....I cried reading ur eulogy about how u came to these lyrics. on 3/11/2010 I came to see u at Turning Stone the day I was discharged from the hospital from a mild stroke. Hence the words, 'i can achieve anythin that I want no matter the outccome, w/this I KNOW I can fly!' Overcomin a stroke took evrythin outta me, I even failed one of my classes, but u know what? Love poured out from all ova, especially seeing u for the first time. After ur show, I decided to be a 'Supawoman' an just live out evryday as if it were my last w/nothin to block my way!
